Open House at Pinnguaq Association’s Iqaluit Makerspace, Hosted by Katinnganiq Makerspace Network

September 20, 2022 – Iqaluit, Nunavut – Today, Katinnganiq Makerspace Network (KMN) and its partners – Pinnguaq Association, Embrace Life Council, and Nunavut Association of Municipalities – invite the public to a display of technology-infused educational tools at the Iqaluit Makerspace, at 1412 Sikituuq Court.

The partnership between Pinnguaq Association, Embrace Life Council, Nunavut Association of Municipalities, and KMN underscores a joint commitment to empowering Inuit youth throughout Nunavut to explore their creativity and ingenuity in safe, productive makerspaces – an opportunity uncommon for youth in Nunavut.

The open house celebrates the positive impacts KMN brings to Nunavummiut youth, made possible through the Government of Canada’s Smart Cities Challenge, of which KMN’s Nunavut-wide makerspace vision was awarded one of two $10M prizes.

“Our Government is proud to partner with the Katinnganiq Makerspace Network in providing a network of safe spaces for young Nunavummiut to channel their creative talents,” said the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities. “With learning activities that align with Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit principles such as collaboration, creative problem-solving and knowledge-sharing, these hubs help build resilience and improve mental health among youth.”

“Nunavummiut youth deserve the opportunity to explore pathways that could lead to their being leaders in this modern technological age,” said KMN Executive Director Brian Pottle. “Being an Inuk who grew up in remote Inuit communities in Labrador, I know how valuable makerspaces can be in contributing to positive outcomes for our youth, for our families, and for our communities.”

Remarks from the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities, will be shared with attendees during the event.
